  • David Hyatt: Childhood friend, New Yorker and mooning connoisseur
  • Rob Schroeder: Journalist, husband of Naomi and DC resident
  • Roy SeGuine: Cyberspace architect, ambient techno aficionado, Virginian

Colleagues

(...which is not to say they're not friends as well—they just don't have personal pages that I know of)

San Francisco Links

  • The Werepad: Old warehouse turned space-age bachelor pad; they used to show great, cheesy B-movies this side of Mystery Science Theater 3000, though they seem to have become a weekend band/DJ venue recently
  • The Odeon Bar: A fine bar, and home to some of the most drunken, inept, yet strangely loveable performance art in town
  • Zeitgeist: After briefly falling from the top of the list, mainly because it's not within walking distance, Zeitgeist again tops the "Sean's Favorite Watering Hole" awards — mainly because they don't charge a cover (hear that, Odeon?)
  • Sadie's Flying Elephant: A great shabby-chic Potrero/Mission bar
  • Laughing Squid: Underground culture web site, which publishes the indispensable Squid List arts announcements by email
  • Aquarius Records: Great little record store in the Mission, with the best shelf-talkers I've ever seen (online, too)
  • Craig's List: One-stop shop for any and all S.F. info—jobs, want ads, events, you name it
  • Killing My Lobster: San Fran's preeminent sketch comedy troupe
  • Intersection for the Arts: Venerable alternative arts space, and home to the awe-inspiring Jazz at Intersection series
  • Great American Music Hall: Hands-down, the best space to see live music in town
  • Le Video: Encyclopedic video store near Golden Gate Park—you can even do a web search on their inventory from home! (Too bad parking's such a bitch)

(I know so little on this subject, I should just drop the pretense and call this section "Pretty Pictures I Like.")

Music

Yeah, yeah. As most of you know, I could write a book. Really. But rather than cataloging zillions of artist/label/shop sites, here are some good, solid, general resources (along with a few oddball links):

  • All Music Guide: When I need to learn something, this is the first place I go (usually followed by Google)
  • Simon Reynolds: Obsessive musical phylogenist? Maybe. Absurdly reductive genre-coiner? Perhaps. That said, still one of my favorite critics
  • NME: Last of the great British music magazines
  • Play Louder: Great, irreverent music forum -- what Punk magazine might have been like if born 25 years later
  • Punk Magazine: You didn't think I'd leave you hanging on that reference, did you? (Check out the Back Issues section)
  • IDM List: For the techno heads
  • Hip Hop Infinity: For the hip-hop heads (duh)
  • Drum & Bass Arena: for the jungle heads (assuming there are any left!)
  • Brainwashed New Releases Schedule: If it's funky, strange and underground, they'll tell you when you can buy it
